Class 6 2011 - 2012

Autumn Term

Reading

We have been working hard to improve our reading skills in Guided Reading.  We have looked at fiction texts with a focus on identifying the mood or feelings of the characters and how we know how they are feeling, using evidence from the text.  We have also explained why the author has chosen to use particular words and phrases and described the effect that the text has on the reader.

Writing

We have been focusing on writing non-fiction texts this term and have written biographies on Henry VIII.   We have also written autobiographies about ourselves.

After half-term, we focused on reading and writing newspaper reports.  We used a film extract from Superman as a basis for our reports.

Maths

In maths, we have worked hard to approach problems systematically.  This has helped us to find all possible answers to the problem.  We have also worked hard to use mathematical vocabulary when solving problems.

One of our main successes in maths has been working on fractions.  We have been able to find fractions of numbers and quantities, simplify fractions and order fractions with different denominators.  Knowing our times tables has really supported us with our work on fractions.

Another area that we have progressed in is using written methods for each of the four number operations.  We have particualrly been successful in using the 'chunking' method to divide by decimals.

Our next challenge will be applying our written methods to solving word problems and algebra!

History

We have been finding out about the Tudors.  We have researched Henry VIII and his six wives.  This involved finding out about each of the wives and why Henry married six times.  We also found out about the children of Henry VIII for our class project.

During our research, we began to understand how life in Tudor times was so different to what we experience today.  We looked at the hobbies and lifestyles of the Tudors as well as what life was like for children.
