Class 5 2011-2012 Autumn term
Reading
We have enjoyed reading a variety of texts and have welcomed lots of new books to our collection which we enjoy discussing on a regular basis. We have looked at the author’s use of language and expressed how it made us feel. We looked into why an author might use a particular word. We have also looked at inferring answers from a text and using evidence to back up our answers.
Numeracy
This term we have been focussing on a variety of mathematical concepts. Over the last few weeks we have identified decimal and fraction equivalents and have moved onto finding percentages. Our work on area proved successful with all children able to find the area of simple shapes and then moving onto compound shapes. Our using and applying session linked to area and had the pupils working in groups to design a healthy eating theme park which linked nicely with our science topic. We have consolidated our written methods and are now starting to apply what we know using a range of problems.

Writing
Year 5 have enjoyed investigating and writing about different genres. To start the year we focussed on writing a story based on the significant author Jacqueline Wilson. To follow we looked at oral instructions and performed these to the rest of the class to see how clear they were. We then wrote our own instructions on how to make a pumpkin. Yes this was the week of Halloween!
The children produced some absolutely outstanding poetry work based on the structure of “The Frozen Man.” They had clearly thought of some interesting adjectives, adverbs and similes which made the writing so successful.
Topic
Henry VIII has been an interesting figure to research this term and the pupils have found him fascinating. We found out that he had 6 wives, why he married them and the fate of all of them. Some had a lucky escape!
This inspired our research project to find out about the children of Henry VIII. The pupils have worked incredibly hard on this and really fine tuned their research skills. (See photo)
We then moved onto investigating life in Tudor times; how the rich and poor lived, the types of clothes they wore and the types of houses they would have lived in.
