 Autumn Term 2011-2012

Reading

We have been reading a range of texts including both non fiction and fiction books. In year 4 we know that expression is important when you read, so we have been trying to use this when we read aloud. We have been answering questions about these book, focussing on what the characters might be feeling, how the book is set out and the language used in the text. The children have also learnt new techniques of how to skim and scan the text to look quickly for a particular word or the meaning of a sentence or paragraph. We are working hard to complete our reading passports to show the variety of books we read.

Writing

We started the year by writing information texts about India (year four's country for the year). We had to use books and the internet to find information about the country before we could write about it. We produced beautiful booklets to tell the reader about school life, houses, animals, famous people, special buildings and food that can all be found in India.

Have a look at the information booklets we produced.

India

We have learnt how to write an explanation text, based on a book called Star Catcher, where a little boy wants to catch a star. We designed our own star catcher and explained how it worked. Some were very imaginative!

We have written recounts based on clips from the films Finding Nemo and Madagascar, to explain events that have happened. We had to work hard to keep our writing in the past tense!

Year 4 are now brilliant at using paragraphs, which was our writing target for term 2.

Maths

In maths we have improved our mental maths through learning new strategies to help us. We have done some fantastic work on fractions, even working out fractions of amounts! We have focussed on using written methods for adding to meet our maths target for term 2 and now know three different strategies we could use.

Here is a link to maths targets and activities to try at home for children in year 4. ACTIVITIES

 Topic

We have been learning about the Romans and the Celts. We know why the Romans came to Britain and why they were such successful soldiers. We can tell the difference between images of Romans and Celts through their clothing. We had great fun learning about Boudicca. We know that she stood up for what she believed in and was a fierce and brave lady. We wouldn't like to meet her!
