During this term, the children have been looking at a range of non-fiction texts.  We have been investigating how different everyday objects work, why some insects and animals live like they do as well as finding out about space.  The most interesting fact so far was finding out 'why stars twinkle!'  Not only did we find out lots of interesting facts, but we have been looking at how the books have been designed.  For example: each non-fiction book has a contents page and an index.  We have also been looking at how the text is set and discussing how our reading alters as a result.

We are currently working on poetry and thinking about how we can perform our poems to each other.

 Writing

We have been developing our writing through investigating adventure stories.  We have had great fun deciding on heroes, baddies and settings.  We have also been looking at how a good set of instructions is set out and written.  We have made pumpkin soup, by following instructions and we have made our cards practically and then tried incredibly hard to write an amazing set of instructions to allow other people to make cards that are just as fabulous! 

Maths

We have spent a lot of time this term multiplying as we work towards our targets.  We have concentrated on our 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables, as well as investigating what happens to numbers when you multiply them by 10 and 100.  We have had great success with improving our times tables and some very interesting explanations when we have tried to use these facts to help us with division.

Topic

Our topic this term has been the Romans.  The children have shown real enthusiasm for learning about life in Roman times, especially investigating their eating habits!  We have learnt about their homes, including how they heated their homes and about their bathing antics.  Our highlight was when we worked in groups and role played being either a Roman or a Celt.  The children had to 'live' life as their character and prepare for the next day, which did get very interesting as some of them were battling against Boudicca at the time.
