Welcome to class two 2011 - 2011

 Autumn Term

Reading

During this term we have been developing our reading skills through fiction and poetry books. We have found this very intriguing and looked closely at the word choices used in the texts. We can identify alliteration, repetition and rhyming words!

 Writing

We have been focusing on traditional tales. We have found these very interesting and identified many common features within these stories. It was very interesting to create our own mixed up traditional tale, and share this with each other.

We have also looked at writing instructions. We had great fun being pirates and following verbal instructions to clean the ship! Then, it was time to put our knowledge to the test and write instructions to find buried treasure.

 Numeracy

During this term we have spent a lot of time looking closely at developing our counting, particularly in twos, fives, and tens. We are becoming very confident at this skill and can group and count objects in twos, fives and tens.

We have also been working on mental subtraction, as this is our target. We have been learning to subtract mentally one digit numbers, multiples of ten and other two digit numbers from a two digit number. We have worked very hard to learn this skill.

Here is a link to numeracy targets and activities to try at home for children in year 2. ACTIVITIES

Topic

We have looked at two topics over the term, and we have really enjoyed both.  First, we explored our local area. This was exciting, as we got to go for a walk around the area looking for different features. During our walk, we even noticed some things we have never seen before for example, solar panels and porches. It was really interesting.

Recently, we have looked and compared old and new toys. As part of this topic, we questioned our grandparents about the toys they had when they were younger and compared these to our toys today. This was interesting, as we noticed old toys are often made of wood, and our toys are usually made of plastic.
